Your Immigration Moment!
Prince Harry Duke Of Sussex As An American?
Unless you live in under a rock, one of the biggest news worthy stories of the year came when we learned the Prince Harry of Britain, Duke of Sussex, would take the hand of Meghan Markle in holy matrimony.
What most don’t know is that the American Actress Meghan Markle had to earn her citizenship, rushing around to complete the tasks needed for British Citizenship. And who can blame her, earning the title of Duchess, getting to retire from the public eye as an actress and ascending to royal status…but still very much in the public eye.
The whole situation got us thinking:
“What if Prince Harry wanted to become an American Citizen”
WHAT WOULD IT TAKE?
If things had been different, and Prince Harry had wanted to become an American Citizen prior or after the wedding instead of Meghan becoming a British Citizen, Prince Harry would have had to gone through a very intensive Immigration process, starting with the dreaded Petition for Citizenship, likely by his spouse Meghan. This is commonly referred to as the Form I-130 Petition for Alien Relative.
It would require residency within the United States from both the petitioner (Meghan) and the applicant (Harry). This first hurdle requires three years of living in the states by Meghan, half of which Harry would have to be living there as well. I’m afraid to say that the time Harry spent wowing Meghan in the States would not count toward the timer.
After this time Prince Harry could be eligible for naturalization and receive a coveted Green Card via marriage.
WHAT WOULD THE PRINCE SUBMIT TO USCIS?
Well retaining a Law Firm who is skilled in immigration processes would be a good move to for his highness, to advise him on what he should submit. Much like the commoners who seek naturalization, a copy of his marriage certificate is a good start, along with passport style photos of the duke and duchess, and declare any legal names/nicknames you might have gone by to be included…which might be complicated when you go by Prince, Duke, or his majesty for a majority of your life.
Now while that’s the basics, we want to increase the chances of USCIS sending a famous evidentiary request, where they ask you to send more stuff to them to prove your credibility. We would want to have a Certified Birth Certificate from St. Mary’s Hospital in London, where Prince Harry was conceived, along with Meghan’s from Canoga Park, Los Angeles. We would have them send in a copy of their wedding album (which might make a nice souvenir for a lucky UCIS Agent), there joint banking statements (which is probably sizable), mutual purchases they did together, information on the start of their relationship (photos, lots of photos). We would include all information on Meghan’s birth in the US, including information about her parents, schooling (from start to finish).
Our philosophy is the more you send the first time, the less you will have to send on follow ups. After this, it becomes a waiting game to see if USCIS will grant the Petition. But while the I-130 is being sorted, an Adjustment of Status I-485 also needs to be filed, and both need to succeed to be adjusted from alien status, to permanent resident (green card holder).
So The Prince Gets A Green Card…
So let’s say they do, and Prince Harry finally gets his Green Card, is he a citizen? The short answer is not quite. You see the Prince, he still is not eligible for citizenship yet. He would have to wait two whole years before submitting an N-400 adjustment of status to citizenship. In case your royal clock is behind, that’s almost five total years of waiting…that could put a strain on the royal couple wouldn’t you say?
While we do not know what would happen to his royalty status if he were to become a citizen, many believe that if you are rich enough, powerful enough, have enough influence you can simply become an honorary citizen right? And who does not like Prince Harry? Can’t Prince Harry just ask President Trump?
Heck we can even put this under supporting American Business, keeping the hit tv show Suits with their beloved Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle.)
Well unfortunately, despite popular demand, you cannot just become an American Citizen by giving a spectacularly written request over to President, even the President thinks it would be really BIG. You see without authorization from Congress, or a declaration of honorary citizenship by an Act of Congress, Prince Harry would just have done it the old fashion way. While we do not think Prince, Harry will be needing immigration help any time soon, we know that you the people might, and we would love to show you how easy it can be with us at your side.
